Adele Pennington and Students from Royal Grammar School Worcester have a Summit Success!

Bramwell Internationals Ambassador Adele Pennington has sent us her latest news from India with students of the Royal Grammar School Worcester on expedition in Ladakh to climb Samgyal (5850m).

Summit Success

The journey began in Delhi a city of extremes, from the oppressive humidity and heat that engulfs you as soon as you leave the dry cool of an air conditioned room to the maniacal drivers who take to the streets in their millions every hour of every day, each making their own small contribution to the dirty fog that hangs over the city. The change in time zone meant that the first and second days combined into one long day, particularly for those members of the team too excited by the entertainment available on the plane to sleep on the flight.

The day in Delhi was mainly taken up by the quest to quench our thirst and get away from the all-pervading heat and recover from a seat gripping minibus journey from the airport. A brief walk through the city led to a restaurant which served litre jugs of coke.

Despite an early (5am) start on Wednesday morning, the heat and humidity was still almost unbearable. A breakfast of toast and cereal without milk followed before a repeat of our breakneck airport journey for our flight to Leh. Having arrived intact, we greeted with relief the news that we would be allowed to take cabin baggage on the flight, somewhat negating the worries about the space in and weights of our main kit bags. We boarded the aircraft, the larger among the group having great difficulty wedging themselves into the seats. However, the scenery for the last half hour was certainly worth the squeeze.

In Leh we caught up with some sleep and acclimatised to the altitude whilst visiting monasteries and a donkey sanctuary. It is a beautiful town surrounded by mountains with the view dominated by Stok Kangri. The team were in very good spirits on their 2nd day in Leh which saw them set paddle down the Indus River. The scenery was magnificent and the 28km journey action packed with rapids, swimming and water fights.

Next stop the mountains in the Nubra Valley!

Samgyal

On 20th July 2011 at 8.54am Adele, five Sherpa’s and all the team members from RGSW stood (or sat) on the summit of Samgyal 5850m. Another Summit success!!!! Adele was in her element as the climb proved to be a little more involved than expected.

Adele and Sherpa Mingma fixed a rope over a huge crevasse which allowed access to the upper final mixed ice and rocky slopes and small summit. Extensive views of more mountains and the odd glimpse of the Karakorum Range through the clouds added atmosphere to what was a fantastic day and a great achievement for all the pupils and Robert Gibson the teacher from RGSW. Well done to everyone and thanks to all the Sherpas.
