On the 8th December Adele nervously made her way down to Buckingham Palace where she had been invited to attend a reception for those involved in Exploration and Adventure. Leaving the comforts of her Meindl boots and Gregory back pack at home, Adele entered new territory and donned a cocktail dress and a pair of heels.
Once through the gates the atmosphere of this grand Palace was overwhelming. Firstly to the cloakrooms, which is where all grace and composure is found and then through to the Picture room where the fun began.
There was a mass of famous people from Michael Palin to Sir David Attenborough and Bear Grylls. Adele saw plenty of familiar friendly faces such as Sir Chris Bonnington and Reinhold Messner as well as some friends Alan Hinkes and Richard Parkes who helped Adele through the reception.
Adele was ushered through on an announcement " Dr Adele Pennington Mountaineer" followed by a firm hand shake from the Queen and a question from the Duke of Edinburgh "So which Mountains have you climbed Adele?" Not expecting to be asked a question Adele hurridly replied "Lot's" and blushed furiously as the moment dissapeared and others followed.
It was a truly amazing experience that felt similar to summiting the highest mountains of the world. With only the steps of the Palace to negotiate in her frock and heels on this Decembers evening, it seemed almost more favourable than a descent from a remote high mountain.
Next week Adele is off to Climb Mt Kenya and will be wearing her Meindl Responds and taking her Gregory Inyo 35 and source widepac.
