The Three Peaks & Ten in Ten

White-out conditions on top of Ben Nevis (June 2015 !!)

Earlier this month, BI team members Justin Grammer and Marina Carmichael joined a group taking on the UK Three Peaks challenge. The group was organised and led by BI Ambassador Rob Fraser and assisted by Cress Allwood, another of BI’s Ambassadors. For those not familiar with this challenge, it involves climbing the UK’s highest peaks, Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in the space of 24 hours and the challenge can be as much about the traffic when driving from mountain to mountain as much as the actual ascents themselves!

Things started well with the group in good spirits on the drive up to Scotland, but Ben Nevis proved a bit of a shock to some of the walkers with a wind-chill of -12’c, snow fields on the plateau and white out conditions with the wind and snow. Many of the cairns were obliterated by snow and the group relied on Rob’s compass skills to get down from the summit. It was a reminder of how quickly conditions can change on UK mountains and you should never take anything for granted, bear in mind this was only a couple of weeks before Summer Solstice and the longest day of the year.

Scafell Pike and Snowdon proved simple by comparison and although Scafell Pike was in cloud by the time the group reached the summit, Snowdon provided the goods with fantastic views in all directions.

The next successful challenge was the The Keswick 10 in 10, ten Lakeland peaks in ten hours, on behalf of the Multiple Sclerosis Society. The team from Bramwell on this event was Marina, Catherine, Jan, Adele, Justin, Harriot, Alastair & Helen. All completed in much better conditions.
